西洋繪畫史上，所謂「古典畫」是指文藝復興開始，一直到浪漫主義，繪畫結合了宗教、文學、政治藝術，約從公元1000年開始到1800年間，本課程所選研究對象有義大利、尼德蘭、德國等文藝復興；義大利、西班牙、佛蘭德斯巴洛克；17世紀荷蘭畫派；17世紀法國古典、寫實畫派；18世紀法國洛可可一直到浪漫主義代表畫家。古典技法是把素描和顏色分開，小心翼翼的解決造型的寫實問題。
本課程研究古典技法的起源，步驟，過程，油畫材料的應用。
在本課程裡將從古代文獻上了解到的幾位有代表性的古典油畫大師的作畫程序作研究，包括凡·艾克、達·芬奇、提香、卡拉瓦喬、倫勃朗。了解一下他們所使用的油畫技法的異同之處。
